James William George Webb (also known as Bob). Northampton R.F.C. & England 1926-1929. Northampton Rugby Union velvet cap awarded to Webb during his playing career. The green and black quartered cap, by Christys' of London, with trimming in gilt metal to edges, quarters, peak and tassel and Northampton club emblem to front, the peak inscribed 'N.R.F.C.', again in gilt metal lettering. Sold with what appears to be a Northampton scarf from the period and two Rugby ties, one possibly a Northampton rugby tie from the period. Very good condition. Qty 4

Doulton Lambeth stoneware beaker with overall impressed floral motif decoration, moulded in relief with three figures in roundels of William Webb Ellis, first kicking the ball, then picking up and running with the ball and being involved in a tackle and with a white sprigged pattern. Doulton Lambeth impressed marks to base, date 1881, and makers mark for Helena M. Pennett and others to base. Approx 5.5" high. Minor chip to inside of rim, very minor firing crack to opposite rim edge otherwise in good/very good condition. Excellent example of this rare rugby ceramic

The majority of earlier issues are bound in original leather, issues for 1922/23 and 1923/24 are slightly smaller format, bound in original leather with gilt to page edges. Several titles have ownership names in gilt to front cover (one additionally inscribed 'Press') or annotated by hand inside for A. Glover (4 copies), A.W. Pullin (2) and J.B. Bapty (13). Included in one issue is a letter addressed to Bapty from a student requesting information for a thesis on the subject of rugby league. Sold with three issues of 'The Rugby Football League. The Laws of the Game and Notes on the Laws' 1970s, two with typed amendment sheets slipped in, and four Official Guides for seasons 1972/73-1975/76. John B. Bapty wrote under the pseudonym of 'Little John' as Sports Editor for the Evening Post (Leeds), and took on the same role at the Yorkshire Post from 1947 until his retirement.

Alfred Pullin was considered one of the great authorities on the subjects of cricket and rugby. He was a regular columnist in the Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post, writing under the name 'Old Ebor', and published several books on Yorkshire cricket
