Christopher Morris Cricket Library, Haverford College, 'presented by W.J. Hole' to inside rear cover. Padwick 394. Front endpaper detached and trimmed. Repairs to internal hinges, slight breaking to page block, otherwise in good condition

The frontispiece wood-engraving of 'The Bowler', William Clarke, differs to that in the English editions, and there is no 'batsman' plate. The 'Preface to the American edition' gives an account of Clarke's career by William H. Bray.

The frontispiece comprises two illustrations, one depicting a cricket scene of a match in play, the bowler preparing to bowl underarm, with reference to a poem on pp 24/25 in six stanzas, titled 'Cricket'. Rebound in later brown leather and marbled boards, gilt title to spine. VG

'Poems'. Thomas Smith. Privately published, printed by John Such, London 1867 for private circulation. Bound in maroon morocco with ornate gilt decoration and title to front and spine. Gilt to page edges. Includes two poems on cricket, 'The Cricket Match. A poem in two cantos' pp 199-218 containing references to 'Felix' and his 'Catapulta', and 'The Origin of Cricket. Sung at the Opening Dinner of the Surrey Cricket Club' pp 254-257. Facing the title page is a small original photograph laid down of the author, signed in ink below, 'Yours faithfully Thos. Smith'. Presentation copy with dedication in ink to front endpaper to C.G. Hale Esq. 'with the author's compliments', dated 21st November 1867. Bookplate of A.E. Winder to inside front cover with a signed handwritten inscription in pencil by John Arlott explaining that 'The Cricket Match' was first published in 1859 under Smith's pseudonym of 'Copthall Chambers' (Smith's office address). A printed label is attached to the front endpaper, 'This Volume is printed for private circulation only. The author is very desirous that his Friends should peruse the Preface before proceeding to read the Poems'. Padwick 6526. 'Bat v Ball. The Book of Individual Cricket Records, &c. 1864-1900'. Compiled by J.H. Lester. Boots Wholesale Printing and Stationery Department, Nottingham and London 1900. Four different editions of the title including the scarce 'Edition de luxe'. Editions are the pictorial 'strongly bound in cloth' edition with handwritten dedication in ink to title page 'To J.W. Goldman, with the compliments & kind regards of A.W. Shelton', dated 23rd May May 1937. Goldman's bookplate to inside front cover. Publisher's note on page v indicates an 'Edition de luxe... is being arranged for'. The scarce 'Edition de luxe' is handsomely bound in black calf with marbled endpapers, gilt to page edges, gilt title to front cover and spine with raised bands to spine. Owner's name in ink to front endpaper of S. Sassoon, dated 17th August 1900. The paper edition with decorative pictorial paper wrappers, owner's name in ink to front wrapper of V.F.S. Crawford (Surrey & Leicestershire 1896-1910). The fourth copy was owned by Alfred J. Gaston's with Gaston's signature in ink to front endpaper, J.W. Goldman's bookplate to inside front cover, bound by Gaston in green cloth with gilt title to front, 'Bat & Ball, J.H. Lester. Cricket Curiosities, A.J. Gaston'. Lacking title, introduction and advertising pages. Padwick 118. Some wear to the wrappers of the pictorial paper edition, the others in good/ very good condition. Sold with an original single page prospectus with printed signatures addressed to 'Members of the M.C.C. of County and other Cricket Clubs' announcing the publication of and to seek subscribers to the 'special edition'.
