He reminisces about a sightseeing trip to Brussels and Paris in 1927 and expresses his concern about reported devastation 'wrought there by the modern weapons of war'. Alec Marsh was chairman of the Eastbourne District, Lewis and Newhaven Cricket Association, and Honorary Secretary of the Sussex Cricket Association. Selmeston and Alciston Cricket Club was founded in 1807. The match was played on St. Swithin's Day, 15th July 1905, in which the men could bowl and catch using only their left hand, and bat with a broomstick! The final result was announced as 'The ladies score is fifty-six, the mens just four runs more; a finer match I never knew, though versed in cricket lore'

'Cricket: A Weekly Record of the Game' ran from 1882 to 1913 when it was renamed 'The World of Cricket' for twenty three issues in 1914. An 'Important Notice' printed on the rear page of the issue dated 15th August 1914 announced that, with the outbreak of the War, publication would be suspended, however a further three issues in September, October and November were published before finally ceasing. The appearance of a regular cricket magazine did not resume until the first issue of 'The Cricketer' was published in 1921

A rare and interesting typescript comprising a collection of sixty cricket verses by Martineau written between c1924 and 1958. 77pp bound in brown card boards. The poems are presented in five sections titled 'Mainly Reflective', 'The Young Idea', 'Heroic Memories', 'Test and Championship', and 'War Years', and the author has recorded when and where each poem was originally published. Recorded in Padwick, no. 6496, as being 'in John Arlott's possession; a copy of the typescript is held by The Library of the Cricket Society'. This is the Cricket Society's copy with label to inside front cover and a handwritten dedication 'To The Cricket Society with compliments, G.D. Martineau'. Sold with four scrapbooks of Martineau's comprising cuttings of published articles that appeared in The Field, Punch, Men Only, The Empire Review etc. in 1941, 1947-1949, 1951 and 1952. Includes typed correspondence dated 1960 to and from Martineau regarding the Freemantle family of Hampshire regarding an article written for 'The Cricketer' in 1947 by Martineau about Andrew Freemantle who played for Hampshire from 1788, and appeared in the first Gentlemen v Players match at Lord's in 1806.
